Speaking on the Creativitea Podcast, she said the obsession with status had created a mindset where people believe they must spend money on expensive products or services simply to prove they can afford them.
“Nigeria is a very, very interesting place. Nigeria is a place where elitism has, I think, messed up people’s minds. So I think people, like, mix up what value is and just, it’s expensive, or you can’t— you’re not buying it, it’s because you don’t have the money.”
Toolz said the mentality has made many Nigerians spend heavily on products and services without necessarily getting value for their money, simply because they do not want others to assume they cannot afford them.
“So that for me is very, very annoying because what has ended up happening in Nigeria right now is we are not getting value for a lot of things. And people end up paying because, ‘let it not be like I don’t have the money.’”
She also urged people to stop judging others based on their choice of luxury items, stressing that someone who does not own an expensive designer bag may simply have chosen to invest their money elsewhere.
“If you’re looking at somebody and, oh my gosh, her bag’s not Birkin, oh, maybe she’s poor. No. Maybe she’s decided, I want to invest in this.”
The media personality also challenged the assumption that a woman who has not undergone a BBL cannot afford the procedure, describing such judgments as foolish.
“You’re looking at somebody and the person hasn’t done a BBL, and you’re like, it’s because she’s what? You are the st¥pid one, you are the silly one.”
